On June 5, 2026, World Environment Day, Batumi University, within the framework of the international project MACRO CLEAN, is planning a seaside Clean-UP event, in which university students and school chidlren will participate.
The following activities are planned within the framework of the event:
- Clean up campaing at Black Sea seaside
- Collection of waste in the sea (by divers)
- Information about sea pollution issues and possible ways to solve them will be provided to students and students participating in the campaign by invited speakers
- The event also includes the involvement of art designers, who will create creative art designs together with students from waste collected on the beach/sea.

The project MACRO CLEAN (BSB00584) “Research, Cleaning Methodologies, Economic Valorization and Pilot Application for Macroalgal Blooms” is implemented with the co-financing of the European Union within the framework of the Black Sea Basin Interreg NEXT Cross-border Cooperation Programme. The project partners are - Sinop University (Turkey) - Project Lead Partner, Union of Municipalities of Marmara Region (Turkey), Batumi State University (Georgia), Shumen University (Bulgaria).
The project objectives include the establishment of a research methodology to study the impact of algae on eutrophication, the development of relevant laboratory infrastructure and the increase of the economic benefits of seaweed in fertilizers and bioplastics production. It includes raising awareness and encouraging cooperation between stakeholders in this process.
