
On June 5, 2026, World Environment Day, Batumi State University, as part of of the international project MACRO CLEAN, organized a Clean-Up campaign in which more than 100 BSU university and High School students participated.
The seaside beach near the airport was selected for clean-up event, where various activities were organized, such as:
- Seaside beach area cleaning - students and schoolchildren cleaned the beach from various waste in the first half of the event
- Collection of waste in the sea by involvement of invited divers with a boat
- Invited speakers (experts of the National Environmental Protection Agency) introduced the university and high school students wtih information about sea pollution issues and possible ways to solve them. A small quiz was also held on these issues
- Art installations were made from waste collected on the beach with the coordination of art designers, in which students actively participated.
The project has many interesting activities planned in the future too, including a series of trainings for students, public and private sector stakeholders.
The project MACRO CLEAN (BSB00584) “Research, Cleaning Methodologies, Economic Valorization and Pilot Application for Macroalgal Blooms” is implemented with the co-financing of the European Union within the framework of the Black Sea Basin Interreg NEXT Cross-border Cooperation Programme. The project partners are - Sinop University (Turkey) - Project Lead Partner, Union of Municipalities of Marmara Region (Turkey), Batumi State University (Georgia), Shumen University (Bulgaria)
The project objectives include the establishment of a research methodology to study the impact of algae on eutrophication, the development of relevant laboratory infrastructure and the increase of the economic benefits of seaweed in fertilizers and bioplastics production. It includes raising awareness and encouraging cooperation between stakeholders in this process.
