Izolda Machutadze, Head of the Division of Colchic Peatlands and Aquatic Ecosystems Conservation at BSU’s Institute of Phytopathology and Biodiversity, participated in the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17), held in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.

The COP17 Summit is dedicated to global efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Its main objective is to assess progress in implementing the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and strengthen international cooperation and financing to achieve the 2030 targets.

The presentation delivered by Izolda Machutadze focused on wetland habitats, ecosystem services, and the role of citizen science. At Havar University, she also held a meeting with Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention).

The discussions focused on the criteria that would enable sites protected under the Ramsar Convention to also qualify for designation as UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites.

In connection with these issues, a meeting between Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention, and UNESCO leadership was scheduled for 9 November. BSU scientist Isolda Machutadze will also participate in this meeting.

The meeting aims to develop a strategy for advancing Ramsar-protected sites towards designation as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as Georgia’s Ramsar sites provide a strong foundation for this initiative.
