Philosophical research in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara traces its origins to the establishment of the Batumi Teachers’ Institute, which laid the foundation for the development of philosophical inquiry in the region.

The establishment of Shota Rustaveli State University in 1990 on the basis of the Pedagogical Institute created a need for a specialized program in Philosophy. This development contributed significantly to enhancing the academic quality of philosophical education at the University and helped address the existing shortage of philosophy instruction in the region.

In 2006, the Department of Philosophy and Political Science was reorganized into the Department of Philosophy and Socio-Political Sciences. In 2007, the socio-political disciplines were separated from the department and incorporated into the Faculty of Social Sciences. Subsequently, the Department of Philosophy became part of the Faculty of Humanities.

Today, the Department of Philosophy offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs, providing students with comprehensive academic training in philosophy and fostering the development of critical thinking, analytical skills, and scholarly research.
