At Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, the teaching of disciplines related to economic sciences began with the subject of political economy, taught by Associate Professor P. Pataraia, from the very foundation of the Pedagogical Institute.
Since the 1990s, during the process of forming a market economy, the main priorities in higher education changed, and the integration of traditional theoretical teaching, characteristic of academic programmes, with new market-orientated teaching began.
In 1994, the Chair of Economics and Management was established at Batumi State University, headed by Associate Professor D. Diasamidze.
From 1997 to 2000, the Chair of Fundamentals of Economic Theory was headed by Associate Professor D. Diasamidze, and from 2000 to 2005 by Associate Professor N. Tsiklashvili.
In 2006, as a result of the reorganisation carried out at the university, all chairs operating in the field of economics were united and the Department of Economic Sciences was established. The department was headed by Doctor of Economic Sciences Professor Rezo Manvelidze. The department had approximately 60 employees, including one full professor, 21 associate professors, and 8 assistant professors.
In October 2009, the Department of Economic Sciences was divided into two departments:
-
Department of Finance, Accounting and Audit;
-
Department of Economic Policy and Business Administration.
The Department of Economic Policy and Business Administration was headed by Doctor of Economic Sciences Professor Rezo Manvelidze until 2013; by Doctor of Economics Professor Gela Mamuladze in 2013–2014; and by Candidate of Economic Sciences Associate Professor Murman Tsetskhladze in 2014–2015.
In January 2015, the Department of Economic Policy and Business Administration was divided into two departments: the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Economics.
From 2015 to 2022, the Department of Economics was headed by Associate Professor Murman Tsetskhladze, and since 2022 it has been headed by Associate Professor Natalia Robitashvili.
The academic staff of the Department of Economics consists of one professor, two associate professors, one assistant professor, and two assistants. Invited lecturers are also actively involved in the teaching process.
The Department of Economics implements bachelor’s and master’s educational programmes in economics. The department provides academic support for the bachelor’s and master’s educational programmes offered at the faculty, which are focused on acquiring new knowledge, developing fundamental and research skills, and preparing competitive specialists.
The aim of the bachelor’s and master’s programmes in economics is aligned with their learning outcomes — ensuring that graduates’ qualifications, knowledge, and skills correspond to the needs of society and the labour market.
The Department of Economics cooperates with higher educational institutions in Georgia and abroad, as well as with governmental and non-governmental organisations. Graduates of the economics educational programme are employed in public and private sector institutions, including the Ministry of Finance and Economy of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, the Ministry of Agriculture, insurance companies, commercial banks, the Department of Tourism and Resorts, and various other organisations and institutions.
