Since 1997, the Faculty of Economics has been functioning at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University. The faculty trained specialists in the following fields: accounting, control and audit; finance and banking; international economic relations; tax and customs affairs; and others.
During the transition period to a market economy, the Chair of Finance and Sectoral Economics played an important role in providing the sectors of the national economy with qualified specialists. The chair was headed by Professor V. Verulidze. Its members included professors and lecturers, among them Candidate of Economic Sciences A. Tsintsadze, Candidate of Economic Sciences V. Verulidze, S. Chechelashvili, N. Robitashvili, G. Safaridze, J. Ananidze and others. With the active participation of the academic staff, new educational programmes were developed and improved, based on the existing demands of the labour market.
In 2005, the Chair of Finance and Sectoral Economics was divided, and on its basis two chairs were established: the Chair of International Economic Relations, headed by Associate Professor V. Verulidze, and the Chair of Finance and Credit, headed by Associate Professor A. Tsintsadze.
In 2006, as a result of the reorganisation carried out at the university, the chairs of Fundamentals of Economic Theory, Finance and Credit, and International Economic Relations were merged. The Department of Economic Sciences was established, headed by Doctor of Economic Sciences Professor Rezo Manvelidze. The department had approximately 60 employees, including one full professor, 21 associate professors, 8 assistant professors, and invited lecturers.
Since October 2009, the Department of Finance, Accounting and Audit separated from the Department of Economic Sciences and began functioning independently. It was headed by Associate Professor A. Tsintsadze. The department included two first-cycle bachelor’s educational programmes: Finance, Banking and Insurance and Accounting and Taxation.
On 5 October 2015, the Department of Accounting, Auditing and Taxation separated from the Department of Finance, Accounting and Audit. From 2015 to 2019, the department was headed by Associate Professor Ia Meskhidze; from 2019, by Associate Professor Darejan Chkhubadze; from 2021, by Assistant Professor Tamta Beridze; and since 2022, by Professor Vazha Verulidze.
The department currently offers one first-cycle bachelor’s programme: business administration, with the specialisation module accounting and taxation.
The Department of Accounting, Auditing and Taxation cooperates with various higher education institutions in Georgia, as well as with the Georgian Federation of Professional Accountants and Auditors. Graduates trained in the field of accounting and taxation work in local self-government bodies, the revenue service, auditing firms, commercial banks, and other organisations.
At present, the department has 5 academic staff members: Professor Vazha Verulidze and 4 associate professors - Darejan Chkhubadze, Besik Bauchadze, Ia Meskhidze, and Ekaterine Shainidze.
