A debate dedicated to International Children’s Day was held at the Child Rights Centre of the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Education at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University. The debate focused on the topic “What Do We Know About Children’s Rights?”

The event aimed to increase awareness of the Children’s Rights Centre and encourage the active involvement of students and school pupils in developing the Centre’s future vision and activities. The debate brought together Batumi State University academic staff, students, teachers, and pupils from Batumi Public Schools No. 3, No. 6, and No. 15, as well as students and teachers from the private school “UG School.”

The participants were welcomed by Professor Lela Turmanidze, Dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Education at Batumi State University, who shared the experience and achievements of the Children’s Rights Knowledge Centre and highlighted its role in promoting awareness and education on children’s rights.

During the event, participants discussed issues related to the protection of children’s rights, key aspects of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, existing stereotypes in Georgian society, and the importance of emotional safety. They shared examples of situations involving both the protection and violation of children’s rights. As part of the debate, students and pupils analyzed specific case studies, discussed challenges and possible solutions, and presented well-reasoned arguments through group presentations. The programme also included an interactive activity entitled “Ball of Thread.”

At the conclusion of the event, all debate participants received a copy of the book “Identifying an Optimal Model of a Safe School within the Social Context of Georgia,” authored by Professor Lela Tavdgiridze and Associate Professor Nato Sherozia, as a gift.
