The Department of Oriental Studies was formed after the drastic changes to the history, archeology and ethnology department, where the priority is given to highly qualified personnel training. This is presumed the most important task of the new department. In parallel, the goal of the Department of Oriental Studies represents serving the national ideals and promotion of the civic awareness. Therefore, it holds an active stance in the social, educational development processes with the state-wise approach.
Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University was founded in 1990 on the background of the Pedagogical Institute. In the opening speech. the then Minister of Education set the priority to launch an Oriental research center at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University in the future.
On May 29, 2015. the Academic Council of Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University issued Resolution N55, which set up Department of Oriental Studies at the Faculty of Humanities. The department currently offers BA educational programs in Oriental and Turkish Studies and Turkish Philology
