The Department of Foreign Languages and Foreign Literature at Batumi Pedagogical Institute was established in 1958.
In 2006, the Departments of English, German, and French Philology, together with the Department of Neo-Hellenic Studies, were merged to form the Department of European Studies.
In 2017, the Department of Slavic Studies joined the Department of European Studies.
The research interests of the academic staff of the Department of European Studies are diverse and encompass translation studies and translation-related issues, linguocultural and comparative research, paremiology and phraseology, as well as literary studies. The department’s professors continuously enhance their scholarly and pedagogical qualifications, actively participate in international conferences, and publish research articles in high-ranking, peer-reviewed academic journals. The department also produces noteworthy monographs and educational textbooks. A number of its researchers are involved in international research projects.
Members of the department maintain active collaborations with scientific and academic organizations in various countries. They are members of international professional associations, serve on the editorial boards of international journals, act as peer reviewers for scholarly publications, and contribute to other academic activities. In addition, some members of the department undertake academic training and professional development at foreign universities through international exchange programs.
